Avvaiyar's first primer
Avvaiyar wrote a single line of advice for each letter of the alphabet, in order. For centuries this was the first thing a Tamil child learned to read.

| ஆ | ஆறுவது சினம் aaruvadhu sinam | Anger is what should cool down. |
| இ | இயல்வது கரவேல் iyalvadhu karavel | Do not hide what you are able to give. |
| ஈ | ஈவது விலக்கேல் eevadhu vilakkel | Do not prevent giving. |
| உ | உடையது விளம்பேல் udaiyadhu vilambel | Do not boast of what you own. |
| ஊ | ஊக்கமது கைவிடேல் ookkamadhu kaividel | Never abandon your enthusiasm. |
| எ | எண் எழுத்து இகழேல் en ezhuththu igazhel | Do not despise numbers and letters. |
