The Thirukkural is 1,330 couplets by Thiruvalluvar, each just seven words long. Here are eight of the most quoted, with meanings in both languages.
குறள் 1 - கடவுள் வாழ்த்து (The praise of God)
அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு
பொருள்: எழுத்துக்கள் எல்லாம் அகரத்தில் தொடங்குகின்றன; அது போல உலகம் இறைவனில் தொடங்குகிறது.
Meaning: As the letter A is the first of all letters, so the eternal God is first in the world.
குறள் 72 - அன்புடைமை (The possession of love)
அன்பிலார் எல்லாம் தமக்குரியர் அன்புடையார்
என்பும் உரியர் பிறர்க்கு
பொருள்: அன்பு இல்லாதவர் எல்லாவற்றையும் தமக்கே உரியதாக்கிக் கொள்வர்; அன்புடையவரோ தம் எலும்பையும் பிறருக்கு உரியதாக்குவர்.
Meaning: The loveless claim everything for themselves; the loving give even their bones for others.
குறள் 100 - இனியவை கூறல (Speaking pleasant words)
இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்
கனி இருப்பக் காய் கவர்ந்தற்று
பொருள்: இனிய சொற்கள் இருக்கும்போது கடுஞ்சொல் பேசுவது, கனி இருக்கும்போது காயைப் பறிப்பது போன்றது.
Meaning: To speak harsh words when kind ones are at hand is to pick an unripe fruit when ripe fruit is there.
குறள் 127 - அடக்கமுடைமை (The possession of self-restraint)
யாகாவா ராயினும் நாகாக்க காவாக்கால்
சோகாப்பர் சொல்லிழுக்குப் பட்டு
பொருள்: வேறு எதைக் காக்காவிட்டாலும் நாவைக் காக்க வேண்டும்; இல்லையேல் சொல் தவறி துன்பப்படுவர்.
Meaning: Whatever else you fail to guard, guard your tongue; otherwise a slip of speech will bring grief.
குறள் 131 - ஒழுக்கமுடைமை (The possession of good conduct)
ஒழுக்கம் விழுப்பம் தரலான் ஒழுக்கம்
உயிரினும் ஓம்பப் படும்
பொருள்: ஒழுக்கம் மேன்மையைத் தருவதால், அதை உயிரினும் மேலாகப் பேண வேண்டும்.
Meaning: Because good conduct brings greatness, it must be guarded more carefully than life itself.
குறள் 391 - கல்வி (Learning)
கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை கற்றபின்
நிற்க அதற்குத் தக
பொருள்: கற்க வேண்டியவற்றைக் குற்றமற முழுமையாகக் கற்க; கற்றபின் அதற்கேற்ப வாழ வேண்டும்.
Meaning: Learn thoroughly and without fault what is worth learning; then live according to that learning.
குறள் 392 - கல்வி (Learning)
எண்ணென்ப ஏனை எழுத்தென்ப இவ்விரண்டும்
கண்ணென்ப வாழும் உயிர்க்கு
பொருள்: எண்ணும் எழுத்தும் ஆகிய இரண்டுமே வாழும் மக்களுக்குக் கண்கள் எனப்படும்.
Meaning: Numbers and letters - these two are called the eyes of all who live.
குறள் 619 - ஆள்வினையுடைமை (Manly effort)
தெய்வத்தான் ஆகா தெனினும் முயற்சிதன்
மெய்வருத்தக் கூலி தரும்
பொருள்: விதியால் கைகூடாது என்றாலும், உடல் வருந்தி முயன்ற முயற்சி அதற்குரிய கூலியைத் தரும்.
Meaning: Even if fate denies it, honest effort repays the body's labour with its due wage.
