How Tamil letters are drawn

Curves, not corners

Tamil script grew up on palm leaves. Straight lines split the leaf, so scribes used curves instead - which is why almost every Tamil letter is round and flowing.

Two habits to build from day one:

  • Start most letters at the top left and move clockwise.
  • Keep letters sitting on the same baseline, the same height.
